1813 - Treaty of Gulistan
The treaty established borders between the Russian Empire and Qajar Iran, ceding Caucasian territories.
1828 - Treaty of Turkmenchay
This treaty further defined borders and ceded additional territories from Qajar Iran to the Russian Empire.
1918 - Azerbaijan Democratic Republic Proclaimed
Azerbaijan declared independence from the Transcaucasian Democratic Federative Republic.
1920 - Incorporation into the Soviet Union
Azerbaijan was conquered and incorporated as the Azerbaijan SSR within the Soviet Union.
1991 - Modern Independence Proclaimed
The Republic of Azerbaijan declared its independence from the Soviet Union on August 30.
1994 - End of the First Nagorno-Karabakh War
The conflict ended with Nagorno-Karabakh becoming de facto independent, though still recognized as part of Azerbaijan.
2020 - Second Nagorno-Karabakh War
Following this conflict, Azerbaijan regained control of several territories, including parts of Nagorno-Karabakh.
2023 - Azerbaijani Offensive against Artsakh
A military offensive led to the end of the Republic of Artsakh and flight of Armenians from Nagorno-Karabakh.
